Synopsis

 
During World War II, newlywed Roger leaves London and his pregnant wife, Gretchen, behind to serve on the frontlines. Thirteen months later, he emerges as the sole survivor of a German attack. Desperate to survive, Roger assumes the identity of a dead German soldier, but his plan falters when he’s captured and sent to a hospital in Grenoble, France, under suspicion. Unable to speak German, he feigns shock and trauma to avoid exposure.

While recovering, a German nurse becomes infatuated with Roger and uncovers his secret. Risking her own life, she devises a plan to create a new German identity for him. Meanwhile, the Gestapo grows suspicious, and Roger faces intense questioning and psychological torment.

Back in London, Gretchen learns that Roger is missing in France. Determined to find him, she volunteers with the Red Cross. In her search, she meets Walter, an empathetic and charming doctor, who falls in love with her and assists her mission. After months of fruitless searching in Allied hospitals, Gretchen prepares to return to London to reunite with her daughter—but not before an impulsive romantic encounter with Walter.

Once home, Gretchen receives a brief, cryptic phone call. It’s Roger. Overwhelmed, she faints, later discovering she’s pregnant. Resolving to find Roger once and for all, she journeys back to France.

Gretchen arrives in Grenoble, where tragedy strikes—her baby is stillborn. At the cemetery, she unknowingly encounters a funeral procession for the German doctor who once saved Roger. To her shock, among the mourners is Roger himself. Their unexpected meeting takes them by surprise, and as emotions run high, the two share a heartfelt conversation. In this moment of profound grief and serendipity, they reconnect and decide to face life together, no matter the obstacles ahead.

However, as Roger returns to express his gratitude to the nurse who saved him, he’s arrested by the Allied forces and transported to London. Accused of desertion, he faces a court-martial. Thanks to a brilliant defense, Roger is acquitted and declared innocent.

Finally free, Roger and Gretchen defy the odds, proving that love can endure even the darkest of times.

Like countless others who have endured the crucible of war, Roger carries the heavy burden of past betrayals and unspoken truths. The shadows of deceit linger, casting a long and unforgiving pall over his attempts to move forward.
